Conventional advice vs. reality

Everyone always tells you to “follow up” with potential employers, to show them you’re really interested. Employers almost always state “don’t call us, we’ll call you”, or “due to the sheer number of resumes we receive daily we are not able to answer questions regarding the status of your resume”. The Economist says “the benefits awaiting America’s unemployed are outdated and skimpy”.
